Khulu Bush Camp
Khulu Bush Camp, Hwange National Park’s quintessential luxury safari lodge. Inspired by the breathtaking splendor of its natural surrounds, Khulu Bush Camp reflects Africa’s timeless wonder and natural beauty, providing you with the ultimate and utterly unforgettable safari experience.
Khulu Bush Camp is the smaller, more intimate sister lodge to its neighbouring Ivory Lodge. Khulu Bush Camp is a tribute to Cedric Wilde, one of the Directors of the Amalinda Safari Collection, who it is named after. Khulu is the community and staff’s affectionate name for Cedric and it means ‘grandfather’. If you are lucky enough to be in camp with Khulu himself your evenings will be spent around the fire, talking of days gone by and strumming to old country tunes.
The beauty of this camp is that it combines luxurious and private accommodation with old world hospitality. Khulu overlooks an ancient riverbed, in today’s terms called a ‘vlei’, known to attract a variety of the greatest wildlife and bird life in Hwange National Park, right on your doorstep.
Khulu Camp has six tents, comprising of four standard rooms and two suites. Each guest tent can be made into either a twin-bed or a king-sized room, each with two wash basins, indoor and outdoor showers, mini bars, and coffee machines. No matter where you stay in camp, you’ll have an amazing view of the surrounding landscapes from the comfort of your room. Main areas include a swimming pool, fire pit, a comfortable lounge and a long dining table for communal dining and sharing stories about your safari adventures.
Activities offered from camp: heading out on guided bush walks; game drives in the mornings and afternoons, with the last drive of the day often ending after nightfall; wildlife hide at nearby Ivory Lodge; Painted Dog Conservation Centre; Cultural visits and interactions; Pan sits.
Amalinda Lodge
Tucked away into an ancient bushman’s shelter, Amalinda Lodge’s charm will leave an indelible impression on every visitor. Some of the most majestic granite scenery in the world is found in the Matobo Hills. It is here that the hopes, trials, and tribulations of the San Bushmen are recorded in the ancient rock art.
Like the main area, each of Amalinda’s nine thatched chalets (including three suites) has the feeling of a natural cave, albeit an incredibly well-furnished and very comfortable cave. Each is unique, defined in shape and size by the space allowed by the boulders, which often form the walls of the room; one chalet even features a genuine San rock painting. The suites again are all different, one has an outdoor shower, a couple a bath and one has a separate sala (day bed) accessed by rope bridge. The novelty of sleeping (quite literally) between the rocks doesn’t wear off quickly. Polished concrete floors run throughout, softened by various rugs and mats. The beds, surrounded by mosquito nets, are substantial; there’s a seating area with a coffee table, tea and coffee station and minibar; and you’ll also find a separate writing table with a lamp.
In the en-suite bathrooms, open-plan showers with hot and cold water are carved into the rock-face, and there are flush toilets. Outside, most of the chalets have a private balcony from which you can enjoy views of the surrounding kopjes and rolling hills beyond.
A cosy library contains some of the old ‘African classics’, while a secluded chess room, located among the tree tops guarantees peace and tranquility. For the wine connoisseur, we recommend a visit to our natural cave wine cellar. At the base of the camp is Amalinda’s famous ‘rock’ swimming pool, naturally shaped and carved over centuries by rain and wind erosion from a massive granite dome. It is here where African memories are made.
Safari Spa, among this most miraculous granite backdrop is an irresistible treasure worth experiencing, drift away on crisp linen, while the scents of ancient African aromas swirl under the canopy of thatch and rock. Drops of aromatherapy oils are added to generous amounts of carrot and nut oils for that exclusive and private massage. A sauna is also available. Amalinda Lodge is a spiritual sanctuary which incorporates the sensitive beauty of the magnificent Matobo Hills and Africa’s wide-open spaces.
Activities offered from camp: Rhino tracking by vehicle or foot; Explore the site of San Bushmen cave paintings; visit the world-famous tomb of Cecil John Rhodes; Cultural and village tours; Infinity Pool; Walks and hikes around Amalinda Lodge; Safari Spa; The ‘My beautiful home’ cycle ride.
